This handcrafted wooden rickshaw is made by the lacquerware artisans of Varanasi, whose wooden toys and lacquerware carry the Geographical Indication tag since 2014. Turned on the lathe, hand-finished and painted in bright traditional colours, it is a toy, a souvenir and a small piece of the city's everyday poetry — and a reminder that Varanasi's toy-makers once carved ivory before turning to wood.
